Can we stop calling it multi-tasking?

If we are truly in-tune with behavior and technology, we’ve got to move past describing how people interact with technology as Multi-tasking.

Multi-tasking these days feels like a hold-over from a time when interacting with two or three appliances felt like a lot for people to manage cognitively, physically. But these days, people don’t think about watching TV and using their smartphone to chat with friends as separate technologies being multi-tasked. It’s just watching TV.

With that being said, how does the story we see on TV play out across other platforms? What are the natural behaviors/tendencies we want to accentuate or utilize at each stage of the story? It’s clear that, now more than ever, we need to ask ourselves questions like these in order to make the most of our interactions with an audience.

What a great SXSW example of technology, music, design, and IRL behavior expressed through design. While the information graphic speaks for itself, I found myself rooting for Vampire Weekend to make it to the moon, even though that’s apparently less work than being on tour with Mayday Parade…. (^_^)

The hardest-working bands of 2010

Full story and press release on our blog
We’ve taken a long, hard look at our data and rounded up a list of the hardest-working bands of 2010, based on their number of tour dates last year. It’s pretty astonishing. The band with the most tour dates, Mayday Parade, had a whopping 194 shows in 2010. That’s about one concert every other day! Meanwhile, Vampire Weekend traveled two-thirds of the way to the moon across all their tour dates.
We were mostly surprised by the diversity of this list. It’s clear that artists of all kinds touring heavily, from hip-hop star B.o.B, to country legend Willie Nelson, to indie newbies Beach House, and metal gods Megadeth, there’s a huge spread in genres and maturity of careers. That makes us so happy because we love seeing all types of fans using Songkick to go to more shows, no matter what kind of music you like. (Hi,RapeJesus, we’re looking at you!)
Download the infographic here.
Here’s the full list:

Welcome to Fire Starter!

This is the beginning.
Almost anything can happen.
This is where you find
the creation of light, a fish wriggling onto land,
the first word of Paradise Lost on an empty page.
Think of an egg, the letter A,
a woman ironing on a bare stage as the heavy curtain rises.

Okay, so that beginning is from Billy Collins’ Aristotle.

But in this spirit we begin Fire Starter!

As so many folks from Draftfcb descend on SXSW in just 10 short days, we thought that we should practice what we preach and live in beta. We’re building this site as well as @dfcbfirestarter to capture everything about human and behavior as it relates to technology as we go through the SXSW experience… and beyond.

So please, join us! Add your voice here or on twitter and share your thoughts on the intersection of behavior and technology. We look forward to it!
