Chromaroma: Lighting up the London Tubes With Data Viz
Chromaroma Visualisations from Mudlark on Vimeo.
Chromaroma does a fantastic job of completing the entire loop of making the regular, boring behavior of taking the subway every day fun.
First, the game element is easy to get into and you immediately see your own data using the same fare card you always use. Then, they made an excellent choice of either playing with OR against your friends.
This choice is vital as it embraces both the social play of achieving goals with friends without having to play at the same time, while allowing competitive people to enter into play that drives them to engage on their own terms.
It will be interesting to see how the metrics shake out: what percentage of people chose to compete against or with teammates, and how much more usage was generated by people who play the game vs. non-playing riders.
And lastly, they complete the loop by curating and then sharing the data in this fantastic video, visually orchestrating all the participants, and returning that to the audience, like a thank you gift for playing the game.
Would love to hear of any Londoners playing Chromaroma, and what the experience is like — in the comments below or @dfcbfirestarter.
